La Traviata: latest news!

Dear All,

It’s been a while since I posted my last blog, apologies… I came back from Cyprus at the beginning of February, and have been learning and practising non stop since then. Constantinos Stylianou’s world premiere at the end of January was a huge success, and a wonderful portrayal of the composer’s versatile and exciting talent in front of a full house. I hope to have a good recording of the performance soon, and be able to include some of it on the website. In the meantime, I do wish that the song cycle travels to more European theatres within 2010.

My latest news are very exciting. I have been wanting to sing the role of Violetta from La Traviata for a good two years now, and I am a great believer in being patient and trusting that Life gives us what we want when the right time arrives… After a successful audition in the middle of January, I received an email a couple of days ago confirming that I will be singing Violetta in European Chamber Opera’s forthcoming production of La Traviata. I was ‘over the moon’ and totally thrilled with the news! I will be posting more information on this soon, the company will be travelling to Kuwait for a full production of the opera, which is coming up pretty soon! …

I have also been offered a recital at this year’s London Song Festival, and will be sharing a concert with baritone Duncan Rock and pianist Nigel Foster, who is also the Artistic Director of the Festival. I am very happy to be participating in this year’s festival, having watched concerts of the festival’s previous years and admired the very high standard of performance. This year’s festival will be devoted to French Song and I can’t wait to receive my repertoire for this concert, which will take place on Monday 14th of June, at St John’s Waterloo. Tickets will be on sale from May 1st; please feel free to visit the festival’s website http://www.londonsongfestival.org/ and book your tickets early!

I will be off to Cyprus again very soon, to perform with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra the ‘Requiem for Heroes’ by Andreas Charalambous. The piece is written for soprano, baritone, orchestra and chorus and the concert is in memory of Hero Grigoris Afksentiou. Our conductor is Karolos Trikolides who will be coming from Thessaloniki to conduct this concert. It is the first time I will work with him, and I am very much looking forward to the rehearsals and the concert.

On my way back to London, I will only have a day to unpack, and will travel again, this time to Berlin for a concert to celebrate the International Woman’s Day! I was truly delighted when I was asked to participate in this concert, with the Trio of the Camerata Europaea, at Konzerthaus Berlin. Feel free to visit the orchestra’s website http://www.camerata-europaea.eu/programm.php to find out more about their concerts, and about our concert too on the 8th of March, along with booking details. I will be singing beautiful lieder by Alma Mahler, the last femme fatale of the 20th century, a passionate composer, a fascinating woman, allied, married, and of course muse to some of the major artists of the 20th century… I will also be singing two contemporary pieces for Soprano and Piano Trio, ‘Meerestiefe’ by Romanian composer Violeta Dinescu, and ‘Freilich erfraulich!’ by Austrian composer Manuela Kerer. Utterly exciting compositions, very different in style and in character, I can reassure you that the concert on the 8th of March will have so much colour, love, variety, and fun! Don’t miss it if  you are in Berlin.

I wrote too much today… It’s early evening, it has been a long day, and I am hungry! Haven’t had dinner yet, and lunch was very ‘light and quick’ as I was rehearsing all day… So, I will sign off, go get something to eat, and doze off in front of the TV, as this is probably the only thing left that my mind could absorb…

Kisses and lots of love,

and speak to you all very soon,

Katerina xxx
